New AC Refrigerant Explained: R-454B and R-32 vs R-410A for Los Angeles Homeowners

Short answer: Newer residential AC and heat pump systems are moving from R-410A to lower-global-warming-potential refrigerants, mainly R-454B and R-32. These are classed as A2L, meaning low toxicity and mildly flammable. Your existing R-410A system can still be serviced, but the new refrigerants are not a drop-in replacement, and new equipment designed for them uses updated components and installation practices.

Manufacturer timelines and rules can change, so confirm specifics with your contractor. This guide covers what Los Angeles homeowners most often ask.

Why the refrigerant is changing

R-410A has been the standard in residential air conditioning for years, but it has a high global warming potential. Federal and state efforts to reduce high-GWP refrigerants are pushing manufacturers toward alternatives such as R-454B and R-32, which have a much lower impact on the climate while keeping similar cooling performance.

R-410A vs R-454B vs R-32 at a glance

Feature R-410A R-454B R-32
Safety class A1 (non-flammable) A2L (mildly flammable) A2L (mildly flammable)
Climate impact High GWP Much lower GWP Much lower GWP
Found in Most systems installed in the last 15 years or so Newer ducted split systems and heat pumps Many newer ductless and some ducted systems
Drop-in for old systems? n/a No No

Does my current AC have to be replaced?

No. If your system uses R-410A and works properly, you do not have to replace it because of the refrigerant change. Technicians can continue to service existing R-410A equipment. The practical effect over time is that R-410A may become more expensive or harder to source as production steps down, which is one more factor when you weigh a major repair against a new system. Our guide on whether to repair or replace your AC walks through that decision. If your home still has an older R-22 system, read about the R-22 phase-out.

Can I just swap in the new refrigerant?

No. R-454B and R-32 operate at different pressures and use different oils and components. A system must be designed and listed for the refrigerant it runs. Mixing refrigerants or converting equipment on your own is unsafe and can void warranties.

What changes with a new A2L system

  • Equipment: components such as the coil, expansion device and sensors are designed for the new refrigerant. Some systems include built-in leak detection and mitigation.
  • Installation: installers follow updated safety and handling practices for mildly flammable refrigerants, including appropriate tools and ventilation.
  • Matching: indoor and outdoor units must be a compatible, approved pair. Do not mix and match with old equipment.
  • Training: work should be done by technicians trained on A2L refrigerants.

What this means for repair costs

If your R-410A system has a refrigerant leak, a technician should find and repair the leak, not just top off the charge. Whether a repair makes sense depends on the system’s age, the leak location, the cost and the likelihood of other failures. A system more than 12 to 15 years old with a major component failure is often a good candidate for replacement. Should I replace now or wait?

Frequently asked questions

Is R-410A being banned?

R-410A is being phased down for new equipment, but servicing existing R-410A systems is still allowed. You do not need to replace a working system solely because of the change.

Is R-454B safe in my home?

A2L refrigerants have been used worldwide and are designed with safety in mind. They are mildly flammable, so proper installation by trained technicians, along with the manufacturer’s safeguards, is essential.

Are new refrigerant systems more expensive?

Pricing varies by brand, size and efficiency. Ask for an itemized quote and compare options, as covered in is it worth getting multiple HVAC quotes.

Do ductless mini splits use R-32?

Many newer ductless systems use R-32. TOP AC installs Mitsubishi Electric mini splits; ask us which refrigerant your selected model uses.

Does the new refrigerant change the warranty?

Warranty terms are set by the manufacturer and installer. Learn what to look for in what warranty your HVAC system should have.
